A cruise ship's luxury voyage turned into a nightmare for 80 passengers when it ran aground on a reef off Papua New Guinea. This incident has sparked outrage and left many travelers disappointed and disillusioned.
The Australian-registered Coral Adventurer set sail from Cairns on December 18, but its journey took a turn for the worse when it struck a reef near the Finschaffen Coast on December 27. With 123 people on board, including passengers from various countries and a crew of 43, the ship became stranded at sea for four days.
A Shaky Start to the New Year
One passenger described the moment of impact as a sudden shake, lasting only 20 seconds, but it was enough to jolt them out of bed and onto the deck. The fear didn't subside easily, as another passenger, Ursula Daus from Berlin, shared her experience of feeling in danger and the uncertainty that lingered for days.
Stranded and Frustrated
As the passengers finally made it back to Cairns, their frustration boiled over. One traveler expressed their disappointment and disbelief upon arrival. This incident is just the latest in a series of troubles for the Coral Adventurer, raising questions about the safety and reliability of the vessel.
But here's where it gets controversial...
In October, the same ship left an 80-year-old passenger, Suzanne Rees, stranded on Lizard Island in the Great Barrier Reef. She was later found dead, leading to an ongoing investigation.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has now detained the ship to investigate the recent grounding. Initial inspections suggest no significant hull damage, but the authority is digging deeper.
The ship's operators have offered refunds or incentives to passengers, but not everyone is willing to give them another chance. Daus, for one, is done with the company.
However, some loyal customers remain supportive, expressing their intention to sail with Coral Expeditions again.
The vessel is expected to return to Cairns for further investigation once it receives clearance.
And this is the part most people miss...
Despite the backlash, the company has apologized and is trying to make amends. They're offering refunds and discounts to regain trust.
So, what do you think? Are these incidents a sign of larger issues, or just unfortunate accidents? Should passengers give the company another chance, or is it time to seek alternative cruise operators? Share your thoughts in the comments!
