David Stearns, President of Baseball Operations, hinted at more moves to come. He reiterated his preference for adding a starting pitcher before the season begins. Starting pitching has been a weak spot for the Mets, and they aim to address it. The rotation, plagued by injuries and underperformance last season, finished a disappointing 27th in innings pitched. This put a heavy burden on the bullpen, leading to a dramatic collapse from the best record in the majors in mid-June to missing out on the postseason altogether.
And this is the part most people miss... the Mets have their eyes on two top options: left-hander Framber Valdez and right-hander Freddy Peralta. Valdez, a free agent with an impressive 3.37 ERA in 166 career starts, is seeking a long-term contract. Peralta, on the other hand, is available via trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, but at a steep price due to his upcoming All-Star season and impending free agency.
Acquiring Peralta would require giving up top prospects, but the Mets are in a strong position after avoiding a trade for Robert by agreeing to cover his entire $20 million salary for 2026. Instead, they sent infielder Luisangel Acuna and minor league right-hander Truman Pauley to the White Sox.
But here's the gamble: Robert, a talented but injury-prone player, has struggled over the last two years. However, he's coming off an All-Star season just a couple of years ago, which is a promising sign. The Mets, backed by billionaire owner Steve Cohen, believe they can turn things around for Robert.

The next day, the Mets secured Bichette with a three-year, $126 million contract, including player opt-out clauses after the first and second seasons. Bichette, one of baseball's premier contact hitters, is set to play third base, a position he last played in high school.
"I'm up for the challenge," Bichette said. "It'll take work, but I'm ready to put in the effort and see what we can achieve."
