Brace yourself: Meridian Energy warns that households could see power bills rise by as much as seven percent this year, driven largely by lines and transmission charges that keep climbing.
Meridian, the country’s largest power generator, swung back into profit in the six months to December, reporting a bottom-line of $227 million after last year’s drought-year loss of $121 million. Chief executive Mike Roan framed the news candidly: the pass-through costs to consumers will likely push bills higher again, and his initial expectation of roughly a 5 percent increase after the Christmas period was revised upward to about 7 percent once the line and transmission components were factored in.
The Commerce Commission regulates these line and transmission cost increases, which are used to fund infrastructure upgrades. While the energy portion of the increases is only slightly above inflation, the line and transmission portion poses a bigger challenge and is expected to flow through to customers for several years. Roan acknowledged that hearing this news would be “really tough” for households.
When asked if Meridian could cushion the blow for customers, Roan said the company did provide relief in energy pricing previously by absorbing some costs and purchasing insurance to stabilize the electricity system. Still, the group generally passes on line charges to consumers. Meridian remains competitive in the residential market, with a 12 percent year-over-year rise in retail sale volumes.
Roan also touched on strategic energy resilience. He noted that the government’s plan to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) would bolster the energy system during dry years. He pointed to a trio of measures—the Huntly strategic reserve, a large demand-response agreement with the Tiwai aluminum smelter, and LNG—as essential tools for navigating future drought risks. He stressed there is no single “silver bullet,” but together they strengthen the system.
Forward-looking signals from the market appeared to respond positively after the LNG announcement and related company results, with forward prices drifting downward by roughly $10 per megawatt-hour.
Meridian and other major generators are advancing multiple generation projects, targeting seven construction-ready sites by 2030.
