Hold onto your hats, car enthusiasts! Mahindra Australia has just unveiled its sales figures for the past year, and the results are turning heads. The Indian auto brand has surged, making waves in the Australian market. But here's where it gets interesting... they haven't always been so forthcoming with their numbers.
Last year, Mahindra experienced an impressive 11.6 percent increase in sales, catapulting them into the top 30 brands in Australia. However, they don't typically share their sales data with the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) for the monthly VFACTS reports. This puts them in a small group of brands, including Cadillac, Smart, and Xpeng, that keep their sales figures under wraps.
Despite this, Mahindra has decided to release a press release detailing their performance, likely due to their strong year. With 4653 vehicles sold, a jump from 4170 in the previous year, Mahindra secured the 29th position overall. They're quick to point out that if you exclude luxury brands, they actually rank in the top 20! This places them just below Skoda (4808 sales) and newcomer Geely (5010 sales), but ahead of Renault (4569 sales) and KGM (4116 sales).
It's worth noting that the overall market only saw a modest increase of 0.3 percent. Mahindra attributes much of its growth to the XUV 3XO small SUV, which launched in July. While they didn't provide a model-by-model breakdown, they highlighted that the XUV700 mid-size SUV, currently Australia's most affordable seven-seat SUV, has exceeded 7000 retail sales since its launch in June 2023.
Mahindra has been selling SUVs and utes in Australia for two decades. Interestingly, they achieved these impressive results without their well-known Pik-Up model last year. Instead, their newer SUVs – the XUV 3XO, XUV700, and the body-on-frame Scorpio off-roader – are driving the brand's success.
Looking ahead, Mahindra plans to re-enter the ute segment in 2027 or 2028 with a new 'global' ute, specifically designed with the Australian market in mind. This is a bold move!
