‘Love Story’ Episode 6 Breakdown: JFK Jr. & Carolyn’s Secret Wedding – What Really Happened? (2026)

In the latest episode of FX's "Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette," titled "The Wedding," we witness the nuptials of the iconic couple, but the narrative takes an unexpected turn. The episode, while capturing some of the romance and intrigue, falls short of the mark in several areas. As a seasoned observer of this series, I find myself reflecting on the missed opportunities and the potential for a more nuanced portrayal of these historical figures.

One thing that immediately stands out is the over-reliance on cliches and stereotypes. The ocean, for instance, is used as a symbol of the couple's contrasting backgrounds, but it feels like a tired trope. We get it; the ocean is special to them. But why does every scene have to revolve around it? It's as if the writers are trying too hard to create a sense of intimacy and significance, and it ends up feeling forced.

The portrayal of the characters also leaves something to be desired. Carolyn, played by Sarah Pidgeon, is depicted as a shrewish and demanding bride, constantly correcting her mother and sister. While it's understandable that she's under pressure to plan the perfect wedding, the constant bickering and nitpicking feel excessive. Where's the fun and lightheartedness that we expect from a love story? Where's the room for growth and development?

The episode also fails to capture the essence of the Kennedy family's legacy. The mention of Hickory Hill, the Kennedy family's home, is a missed opportunity to showcase the grandeur and history of the family. Instead, we're treated to a tidy and orderly house, which feels out of place. Where's the chaos and drama that we expect from the Kennedys?

On the other hand, there are some bright spots. The recreation of Cumberland Island and the stately inn are beautifully done, and the little Baptist Church adds a touch of quaintness. The scene where John and Carolyn decide not to invite Aunt Lee is a nice touch, and it's refreshing to see them stand up for themselves.

In my opinion, the series "Love Story" has the potential to be a captivating and nuanced portrayal of the Kennedys, but it's falling short. The writers need to take a step back and think about what makes these characters and their story so fascinating. They need to focus on the nuances and complexities, rather than relying on cliches and stereotypes. Only then can we truly appreciate the legacy of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.
